One of the first rules of search optimization is to get your site fully indexed by providing search engines with an XML sitemap. This insures that search spiders are aware of all of the pages in your site. Properly optimized sitemaps show search engines what the structure of the site should be; giving search engines a better idea of how to index a site. The better optimized the site map the better indexed a page will be. And while they don’t guarantee that every page of your site will be indexed, an XML sitemap, in general, improves the overall indexation, and the search spider does not need to rely solely on links within the website to “find” all of the pages. Many people don’t realize that Google allows multiple sitemaps and sitemap indices that help with structuring the XML, especially larger sites. In recent test run by CIM with multiple sitemaps we have seen a significant increase in the number of pages indexed, so it appears that providing search engines with multiple sitemaps can improve overall indexation.Multiple sitemaps can also point out where indexation issues are. They provide a more comprehensive overview of the site and can also allow duplicate content to be revealed, while drilling down to see specific areas of concern.
